A secular eulogy finding meaning in consequence, memory, and the finite life fully lived.
Ravi did not believe meaning waited somewhere beyond this life. For him, meaning was made here—in the consequences of our choices, the quality of our attention, and the lives made easier because we were present. He cared about evidence, which means he would not want vague claims today. The evidence of Ravi is specific. It is in the students who changed direction after his encouragement. It is in the trees he planted knowing he would never sit in their full shade. It is in friends who learned from him to ask, “What would actually help?” before offering help. His death is not less painful because we speak about it without religious certainty. This life was precious to him precisely because it was finite. Losing it matters completely. We cannot promise one another that Ravi continues in a form we know. We can say with confidence that his life continues to have effects. Our language, decisions, and standards carry traces of him. The task he leaves is within reach: pay attention, revise when evidence asks, reduce suffering where we can, and enjoy the astonishing fact of being here together. Ravi lived that task seriously and with great humor. We are changed because he did.
